In January 2024, when Vitto was just 1 year old, we set out for a very special adventure: our first snow hike! The destination? Alpe Prabello, a stunning spot in the Valmalenco region of Italy. If you're not familiar with Valmalenco, it’s a beautiful valley located in the Lombardy region, known for its snowy peaks, picturesque views, and peaceful atmosphere. It’s a fantastic place for both hiking in the summer and winter sports.

The Journey to Alpe Prabello

We parked our car a little before Campo Moro, where we began our hike. From here, the trail took us to Alpe Prabello, situated at an altitude of 2,227 meters. The hike itself was challenging but rewarding, and we were lucky to pass by Rifugio Ca Runcasch along the way. This cozy mountain refuge was a great spot for a quick break and to enjoy the crisp mountain air.

Our ultimate destination was Rifugio Cristina, a mountain refuge known for its delicious food and stunning views. After a rewarding hike, we reached the refuge, where we were able to enjoy a well-deserved break. Vitto had a blast playing in the snow, and we couldn't help but admire the stunning alpine scenery that surrounded us. Feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty of the mountains with our little one!

A Family-Friendly Hike

The hike took about 3 hours each way, which felt like the right amount of time for us, especially with a baby in tow. While the trail wasn’t too difficult, there are a few things you should keep in mind if you're planning a similar hike:

  • Spikes for your shoes: The trail can get slippery in certain spots, so it’s important to bring spikes to prevent slipping.

  • Weather: Always check the weather forecast before heading out. You want to make sure the conditions are safe for you and your baby. We were careful to choose a day with clear skies and nice weather, since we didn’t want to risk a sick baby.

  • Baby’s warmth: It’s crucial to keep your little one warm. Layers are key when hiking in the snow—just like adults, babies need to be dressed in layers to stay comfortable in the cold.

  • Cover for backpack: If you can, bring a cover for the baby’s backpack. It might get windy on the way down, and having a cover will help protect them from the chill.

Heading Back

After enjoying some time at Rifugio Cristina, we made our way back down the trail. The return hike was just as beautiful, and it was the perfect way to end our snowy adventure. It was such a rewarding experience to share this hike with Vitto, creating memories that we’ll treasure forever.
